The permanent first molar usually appears in the sixth year of life and is part of the secondary, or permanent, teeth. The first molar is preceded by the second bicuspid and followed by the second molar in the arrangement of the teeth from the midline of the mouth. Molars have somewhat flattened surfaces and specialize in grinding food.
