The dorsal metatarsal ligaments, transverse arches, stretch across the foot. These ligaments, along with the posterior longitudinal ligaments and the anterior longitudinal ligaments form arches that provide a stable, spring base for the body. At times, the tissues that bind the metatarsal become weakened and produce fallen arches or flat feet.
