The permanent second molar usually appears in the 12-13th year of life and is part of the secondary, or permanent, teeth. The second molar is preceded by the first molar and followed by the third molar in the arrangement of the teeth from the midline of the mouth. Molars have somewhat flattened surfaces and specialize in grinding food.
